Where to Stay in Switzerland - Kulm Hotel
No one can dispute that Kulm Hotel is one for the most legendary and exclusive addresses in St. Moritz. The history of hospitality in the centre of the Engadin Alps, especially St. Moritz, began in 1856, when Johannes Badrutt took over the 12-room Pension Faller, expanded into Hotel Engadine Kulm, which then became the Kulm Hotel (Kulm means “submit” in German). Without his vision, St.Moritz wouldn’t be the cradle of winter tourism as we know today.
As soon as we parked at the Kulm Hotel, we were greeted by a warm welcome by the concierge Claudius, who took care of car and luggages right away and led us to the reception to check in. Walking through the lobby, we were in awe with the hotel’s beautiful royal décor and its expansive view to the mountains and the lake. We made a reservation right away for the a tea time by the beautiful arched window at 3 pm, as it is rated as one of the most iconic thing to experience when staying at the Kulm Hotel.
Our suite, No. 280, is probably one of the best rooms of the hotel. Not only it is newly renovated with spacious and modern bathroom, beautiful decor, but also has a stunning mountain and lake view from two sides of the suite. During our stay, we ordered both breakfasts into our room just to enjoy that view.
Speaking of dining, Kulm Hotel is an absolute heaven for foodies like us. On the first evening, we tried out The Pizzeria, an authentic Italian restaurant that offers many delicacies, pasta and crispy pizza from wood-fire oven. You can just watch the chef making your pizza from scratch from your table.
Then of course, when one says at at the Kulm Hotel, one must, must, dine at the Kulm Country Club. Once the headquarters of the figure skaters during the 1928 and 1948 Olympic Games, the ice rink, where the Kulm Country Club is located, is now a landmark meeting point for guest and locals in St. Moritz. After a full renovation by the legendary architect Norman Foster, , the Kulm Country Club looks better than ever. They kept much of the original features of the country club and added a modern touch. Walking through the restaurant and bar, you will notice a selection of photographs, bobsleighs, sledges and other decorations from the region, which were hand picked and positioned by Lord Foster. We also enjoyed enormously the dishes prepared by the Swiss Chef Daniel Müller. The Yellowfin Tuna is an absolute must-try. Drawing from his work experience from Ibiza and Asia, Chef Müller gave us an authentic Asian dish with a Swiss twist.
The Kulm Hotel is also a haven for those seeking relaxation, comfort and escape from the fast paced world. We love the smell of the fine pine wood in the sauna, the breathtaking view over Lake St. Moritz from the outdoor pool and the comfy lounge chairs by the floor-to-ceiling window. It is such a wonderful space to connect with our senses again.
When it comes to activities, the Kulm Hotel has a lot to offer thanks to its central location in the St. Mortiz village. Just short walk, you are right in the centre of the town, which you can find traditional Swiss bakeries, Confectioneries, watch shops, clothing stores, and etc. You can also go for a nice walk up the hill from the hotel to get a panoramic view of the town. For those who love ice skating, one must try the famous ice skating ring by the Kulm Country Club.
One of our favourite day trip was taking Bernina Express train ride. The Kulm Hotel offers its guests complimentary shuttle service to the train station. From there, we bought the tickets from St. Moritz to Valposchiavo. Some of the trains also have the Panoramic Coach, which is another cool experience. Just ask the ticket office before your departure to make sure you get on the right train. The scenery of this route is just beyond amazing, impressive Swiss Alps, rivers, waterfalls, wild animals, lakes, and more.
Definitely two days were far too short for our visit in St. Moritz with the Kulm Hotel. I am sure we shall return one day soon.
